The Birds of America - First Royal Octavo Edition
Adirondack Retro has recently acquired these extremely rare and highly collectible First Edition Royal Octavo Edition Prints of "The Birds Of America" by John James Audubon, published by J.J. Audubon, New York and J.B. Chevalier, Philadelphia. The Hand-Coloured Stone Lithographs of this first royal octavo edition were lithographed by the Philadelphia firm of J.T. Bowen between 1839-1844. The outlines were hand printed from a lithographic stone and each print was hand coloured. They were produced from the much larger Havell images, using the Camera Lucida. These prints bear the same legend as the Havell Edition, except that J.T. Bowen is shown as the Lithographer in the lower right corner of each print. Each print also bears the Plate Number in the upper right corner, as well as the subscription number in the upper left corner. It is the only octavo edition in which the prints were prepared under the direct supervision of John James Audubon. These Audubon Stone Lithographs exhibit wonderful color and detail, and are extremely popular and increasingly scarce.

VG: This grade means that the print or ad has minor defects, which may range from minor soiling or foxing to a very minor tear, none of which pertrude into the image itself. VG-: This grade means that there is relatively significant staining, soiling, foxing etc. Most of the imperfections would be hidden once matted. Good: This grade means that there is significant soiling, foxing, creasing or water damage, which pertrudes into the image itself, but still worthy of consideration for a collector. Poor: This grade means that there is significant imperfections or other factors which significantly detract from the print or ad.
